Last night we lost power in my area, but I was still online and able to save not only my work but inform my client of the situation and when I would be able to complete the project after restoration. All because I have a battery backup on my networking gear and on my computer workstation.
Now you may think, oh what waste of money, you only get 15 to 30 minutes but in the 2 minutes it took for me to explain the situation and setup a follow-up appointment time and save our progress, I earned the respect of my client for being prepared. That to me is something worth more than the $200 I spent on my backup units last year plus they already paid for themselves twice over since installation.
So if there is anything I can tell you about preparedness in the face of your clients its this, be. That’s right be, as in be prepared, don’t act, don’t think, don’t consider… just be. I suppose another thing I can tell you is, get yourself a UPS or two, battery backups go a long way in saving your tail when the lights go out.
